The Heartwarming Story of Come From Away
Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 airline passengers who were unexpectedly stranded in Gander, Newfoundland, in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As American airspace closed, 38 planes were diverted to this small Canadian town, effectively doubling its population. The musical vividly portrays the extraordinary generosity and hospitality of the Gander residents who opened their homes, their hearts, and their lives to the "plane people" from around the world. The show features an incredibly talented ensemble cast, with each performer skillfully portraying multiple characters – both Gander locals and stranded passengers – through quick changes of costume and voice. This innovative storytelling technique highlights the collective human experience rather than focusing on individual stars, making the ensemble itself the true "performer" of this powerful narrative. The music, a blend of folk, rock, and Celtic influences, is both uplifting and deeply moving, driving the story forward with infectious energy and emotional depth. The musical has garnered widespread acclaim for its message of hope, resilience, and the power of human kindness in the face of adversity, earning it numerous accolades including a Tony Award for Best Direction.
