Frankenstein Reimagined: A Cinematic Shadow Play

Rather than a direct retelling, Manual Cinema crafts a poignant prequel and sequel to the classic story, focusing on Mary Shelley herself as she grapples with the traumatic loss of her own child, intertwining her personal grief with the monstrous narrative she brings to life. This innovative approach offers a fresh perspective on a familiar tale, adding layers of emotional complexity and psychological depth. The visual language of shadow puppetry is uniquely suited to depict the eerie beauty and tragic loneliness inherent in Frankenstein's monster, bringing a spectral quality to the characters and settings. The live score further enhances the mood, oscillating between suspenseful tension and melancholic beauty, drawing the audience further into this haunting world. Attendees of Manual Cinema's Frankenstein at the Wisconsin Union Theater can expect a powerful, thought-provoking performance that not only entertains but also resonates with contemporary relevance, asking profound questions about what it means to be human, to create, and to confront the consequences of our ambitions.
